Huge column less spaces are typically the requirements of commercial buildings with requirement of more free spaces.

A project planned by Preethi Architects for Mr. Dinesh for his project located at Banashankari, Bangalore, was provided with such space in the basement of the building.

To cater to this requirement, provision of Floating Columns was planned. What is a Floating Column? A study for the design aspects for provision of these columns was conducted by my team. Here, post-tension beams, a horizontal member, were introduced to support the floating columns taking into consideration lateral loads, if any.

Floating columns rest on post-tension beams which are designed to take the load of such columns and transfer the load to the columns below which support these beams. I could achieve this with the support of my team and Ultracon Structural Systems, a PT BEAMS VENDOR.

For this project, the structural design catered for the building with a basement with column free spaces, ground and four upper floors.
